History
Cauthen Funeral Home was founded in 1940 by H. Roger Cauthen and his wife, Ruby Lloyd Sistare Cauthen. Mr. Cauthen was a 1932 graduate of the Gupton-Jones College of Mortuary Science in Nashville, Tennessee. Mrs. Cauthen had attended Winthrop College, in Rock Hill, SC, and was one of the first women to become a Licensed Funeral Director.
Soon after establishing with their first location at 105 South York Street, the team of Roger and Ruby Lloyd Cauthen became well known for quality funeral service in Lancaster, SC. Another Cauthen Funeral Home was soon organized to serve the Kershaw, SC area (mid-1940s). In 1963, the firm moved to its present location at 410 West Meeting Street in Lancaster.
Mr. Cauthen's son, Hazel R. Cauthen, Jr., became President and General Manager in 1972 and has spearheaded the firm's expansion into York County, building Cauthen Funeral Home and Rock Hill Memorial Gardens at 700 Heckle Boulevard in Rock Hill, SC.
Locations
State Licensing All our locations are permitted by the South Carolina Department of Labor, Licensing and Regulations - State Board of Funeral Service to operate as funeral homes. They are also bonded and licensed by the South Carolina Commissioner of Banking to handle pre-need funeral sales.
Staff
Licensed Professional Staff Our professional staff is second to none. Educated at some of the finest funeral service education institutions in the country, they add annual continuing education as required by state law and Cauthen Funeral Home policy. On staff are funeral directors, embalmers and licensed pre-need insurance sales people. Our funeral directors are members of the Academy of Professional Service Practice and are accredited as Certified Funeral Service Practitioners and others that are Certified Pre-Need Consultants. Because or our closeness to North Carolina, several of our members are licensed there as well.
Funeral Assistants These ladies and gentlemen are the mainstay of our organization. They assist us in the day-to-day operations of our company and complete many of the functions that non-licensed personnel are permitted to do. They are your friends and neighbors.
